The first of three CDs devoted to the complete piano sonatas of Prokofiev is released this month with independent classical label Somm.

Containing the first five of the composer's remarkable cycle of some of the most original and diverse piano works of the Twentieth Century, and including Peter Donohoe's own sleeve notes, this recording has already received extraordinary critical acclaim. For example, Scotland's leading critic, Michael Tumelty, writes here: "This is Prokofiev as you have not heard him."

Peter Donohoe regards the first five of Prokofiev's cycle as gems of the repertoire: "Whilst the great trio of Sonatas Nos. 6, 7 and 8 - known as the 'War Trilogy' - are generally regarded as amongst the most significant and powerful of all piano works, we must not forget the importance and originality of their predecessors. From the Late-Romantic Russian style of the First Sonata, through the arresting and youthful acerbity of the Second, the phenomenal virtuosity of the Third and the multi-layered dark emotions of the Fourth, to the quirky Stravinskian charm of the Fifth, every one is a revelation. I am extremely proud to have been associated with these works for so long, and it has been a pleasure to record them for Somm Recordings."
